Verizon Centers Health Issues
July 27, 2010
When the Verizon center first opened it’s doors in 1997 (then the MCI center), it had the distinction of being a one of a kind arena. Well today it holds another distinction but one they shouldn’t be too proud of. A health inspection report conducted by ESPN, labeled the Verizon Center as having the worst health violations among sports arenas in the country. The report finds every food vendor in the building in violation of health codes and mice droppings were found in at least 10 food preparation areas.
Owner Ted Leonsis had this to say on his blog: “I was surprised and disappointed by ESPN’s recent industry-wide report and ratings related to the cleanliness of professional sports venues, including Verizon Center. Since we acquired Verizon Center from Washington Sports and Entertainment six weeks ago, we have been planning and making improvements. Please be assured that we take the complaints of our customers extremely seriously, and quality and cleanliness are paramount.”
Well as a native Washingtonian and a Wizard fan, I hope the Verizon Center cleans up their act soon (along with the food stands) as the home team just signed two high profile young players in hopes to bring in more spectators. I sure would hate for someone to order a hot dog and get unexpected chocolate sprinkles.
